Tompkins Square Park, in New York City's East Village, has produced coin recoveries dating back to the 1830s. A construction site in Philadelphia recently yielded ceramic perfume containers and embossed pipe bowls from the 1860s. "Urban treasure hunter" Chaplan explains how to find, unearth and identify valuable artifacts like these in this how-to manual. He provides information on dealing with curious onlookers and fitting into a neighborhood (in "upscale" areas, dress like a jogger; in "tough areas," wear camouflage items and worn jeans), covers legal issues, provides a surprisingly scholarly and in-depth lesson in archeology and details how and where to search for and clean old coins, bottles and historical and prehistoric artifacts (he also gives tips on how to cash in on this hobby). Chaplan peppers his text with quotations from fictional and real adventurers, from Sherlock Holmes to Rudyard Kipling, and includes do-it-yourself instructions for building a sifter and even setting up an electrolysis device for cleaning unearthed metal objects. Chaplan's enthusiasm enlivens the extensive, solid factual information, and although his comparison of urban treasure hunters to history's swashbuckling explorers is a bit exaggerated, stories of his own hunting experiences in the greater New York area, as well as tales of discoveries of booty in unexpected places, prove his point that adventures and buried treasure are closer to home than most would expect. If you wanna know about a gun, look it up in Shooter's Bible. My gunsmithing, wildcatting, varmint popping, bullet pouring Uncle Floyd used to repeat that phrase like a Mantra. The first SB I read was dobbed with gun oil, bent pages, rips in the cover and a permanent position on the corner of my uncle's loading bench. When ever I pick up a copy of SB, I still get flashback visions of mountains of .38 Special wad-cutter bullets, coffee-cans of brass, and metal cans of assorted Hogdon and Herter gunpowders. Stoeger is now owned by Benelli which markets some of the finest firearms on the planet. To their credit, however, the Benelli folks have left intact the creditability factor that has made SB the uncompromised industry-wide reference book that it is. The 99th edition includes 200 full-color plates of new guns and products, and the usual up to date prices and specifications of thousands of firearms (handguns, rifles, shotguns, black powder) and shooting industry products. Where else can you find out that a Smith and Wesson Model 442 is a double-action revolver with rubber grips, 1.8 inch barrel, weighs an ounce under a pound, shoots .38 specials, chambers 5 rounds and retails new for $498? While firearm descriptions and info are the backbone of this bible, it also covers in detail spotting scopes, binoculars, bullets, factory ammo, powders, ballistics, sights, holsters and reloading equipment. If it involves shooting, SB has it covered somewhere in those 576 pages. I can't imagine a hunter, shooter, or collector who doesn't own a copy of SB. By the end of 1954, this will have expanded to nine. Linus still doesn't speak (except, on a few occasions, to himself, à la Snoopy), but Schulz begins laying the foundation for his emergence as the most complex and arguably most endearing character in the strip: garrulous and inquisitive, yet gentle and tolerant. And he evens acquires his "security blanket" in this volume! Meanwhile, Lucy, an infant just a year ago, has forcefully elbowed herself to the front of the cast, proudly wearing her banner as a troublemaker or, in Schulz's memorable phrase, "fuss-budget." The strong, specific relationships she sets up with each character further contributes to making her central to the strip. (She has earned her cover status on this volume.) This period's significant new character is Pig-Pen, who would remain one of the main cast members throughout the decade. And then there's Snoopy. To readers unfamiliar with the early days of the strip, Snoopy's appearances here will no doubt come as the biggest surprise. Although Snoopy has started talking/thinking to himself, he does no imitations (except for one brief shark impression), he doesn't sleep atop his doghouse (much less type or fly a Sopwith Camel), and has no fantasy life—in fact, he doesn't even walk upright! But as we know, he is merely biding his time, and his evolution continues its fascinating course within these pages.

Fifty State Commemorative Quarter Folder: Deluxe Edition 1999-2008

I have dozens of albums and folders in which I put my quarter collections. This folder is one of my favorites. It is beautiful and sturdy. Sure the multi-page albums are a lot nicer but also cost four times the price. So if you want a good looking strong folder, and do not want to spend too much money, this is the folder for you. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS: 1- Whitman produces one of the most beautiful coins folders in the market. 2- Fits the entire state quarter collection including both Denver and Pennsylvania mints. 3- Coins do not touch each other. 4- Opens to display entire collection. 5- Extra information on the States such as: Statehood Date, Capital, Flower, Song and Nickname (Alaska's nickname is The Last Frontier. Pretty cool, huh?) 6- Its Price
Cons: 1- Quarters holes are small and placing the quarters can be difficult. But if you use a small towel for support it will make it easier.

The Marvel Vault: A Museum-in-a-book With Rare Collectibles from the World of Marvel

I bought this book and it provides a nice overview of Marvel Comics from its pulp magazine roots to its current incarnation as a multimedia giant.
The reader is given glimpses of the inside of Marvel, however the main gimmick of this collection is the reproductions of various Marvel items; and this is where the disappointment lies. Some of the items like the buttons are just paper reproductions (not actual badges); the reprint of the Marvel No Prize Book is dark in color; and the reproduction of a Marvel Convention Program is so small as to be unreadable. In all cases full size reproductions could have been slid into the plastic binder pockets.
Some of the ommissions are glaring. Marvel Value Stamps are reproduced and it is stated that a prize was given for a full set of stamps; but what was the prize?
The binding is spiral so turn the pages slowly and you will have to settle in your mind if you want to throw out the cardboard backed inside the box or retain it for mint value.

This book is essential for every collector. Its importance is not just as a source of coin values. In fact, that is the least useful part of the book for more common series because, for one thing, it generally doesn't evaluate coins over MS63. This is great for earlier more expensive coins. Prices for popular series that have few varieties, on the other hand, are more fluid because those coins are being constantly traded; also, higher grade examples of these coins can be obtained by people with smaller budgets. So, while it's useful as a guide to prices for scarcer coins that are hard to obtain in grades over MS63, for most silver coins, the internet venues (such as Coin Values and the PCGS price guide) are more up to date.
The indispensible value of this book lies in its detailed and mostly illustrated listings for just about every variety of every U.S. coin. If you collect early coins, especially coppers, take this book with you wherever you go to buy or bid on coins. In fact, most auction catalogues will tell you the actual page of this book where the coin being sold can be found. You can't get by without it.
